They Rioted Post Stonewall! What will we do Post Rainbow lounge??

Do you ever sit back and contemplate all the changes that have come in the last 40 years? The fact that during the days of Stonewall GLBT people were not only accosted but could be committed for insanity just for being GLBT still appalls us. But, the Homophobia that existed back in 1969 still runs very rampant today but not enough to cause the events of that infamous evening right? WRONG! 40 years to the day from the Stonewall Inn Raid there has been another raid, this time at a little known bar outside of Dallas, TX. According to the Ft. Worth Police Department, routine raids were being conducted on a few bars in the area in collaboration with the Alcohol Beverage Commission. The Rainbow Lounge was caught in the cross fires this time where 6 officers and 2 ABC agents raided the GLBT bar.

In many cases these raids are simple they (the authorities) enter the establishment, card everyone, check the ABC license of the bartender and leave without incident. But in this case the Police arrested 7 people for Public Drunkenness, (hmmm isn’t that what a bar is for to get drunk?)

Now keep in mind that it only takes one police officer maybe two at best and one ABC agent, but in this case it was an over kill of 6 and 2. In the FT Worth Police defense they say that the 9 arrested were VERY drunk and had made sexual advances on the officers. One of the men taken from the scene was taken in an ambulance with a fractured skull after being “taken down” for grabbing an officer’s crotch allegedly.

Was it necessary to have this amount of force for "public intoxication"?

There were eye witness accounts that differ significantly from that of the authorities on record. One has stated that he was sitting with friends on the patio when the officers entered the area. They asked why everyone had gotten so quiet, when one in the group continued the conversation officers arrested one of the patrons. Another witness stated that he watched as the first patron was arrested. He states that a man at the bar took a sip of his drink and was bushed on the bar by the officer and handcuffed. None of the witnesses remembered or recounted any sexual advances toward any officer or ABC agent.

Now keep in mind that we know that straight people don’t really keep much gay history in their head such as the 40^th anniversary of stonewall and all but they surely knew that the Million Gay March was to be heald the next day in Dallas.

So we ask….

Coincidence? We think not! This just goes to show you nothing has really changed it is only being said behind our backs now so they can get away with it.

All the more reasons why the H&W Marriage Equality Tour will go on and should be something to help each city we visit mobilize against attacks like this. If we are willing to stand up and be counted in every state, you as GLBT Americans should be willing to stand with us for positive change!

Obama great promises, no delivery.

Though our beloved president never claimed to be anything but straight, he did give  GLBT people hope that in our future (the next 4-8 years) we would be treated more equally.

In his acceptance speech upon winning the presidential election he said;

” If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

Its the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.

Its the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled – Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.”

When the word “Gay” was spoken the crowd went wild, because those are the words we had been waiting for. We as GLBT citizens have been waiting our entire lives to have someone in the White House that not only understood that we were being treated unfairly but also that we needed the government to do something about it. OHH and lets not forget his campaign promises, where Obama is quoted as saying;

“As your President, I will use the bully pulpit to urge states to treat samesex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws. I personally believe that civil unions represent the best way to secure that equal treatment.

Just as important, I have been listening to what all Americans have to say. I will never compromise on my commitment to equal rights for all LGBT Americans. But neither will I close my ears to the voices of those who still need to be convinced. That is the work we must do to move forward together. It is difficult. It is challenging. And it is necessary.

Americans are yearning for leadership that can empower us to reach for what we know is possible. I believe that we can achieve the goal of full equality for the millions of LGBT people in this country. To do that, we need leadership that can appeal to the best parts of the human spirit.”

President Obama was this just lip service to get our vote and our campaign contributions? We have supported you, campaigned for you and even given you the bennifit of the doubt when DADT was not repealed right away. But your most recent acts in support of DOMA flies in the face of every GLBT person that not only believed in you and your administration but also beleived in your “yes we can” and “Change” message.

So because you President Obama are no better than Mr Mcain would have been for GLBT people and equal rights for all, did our vote truely count. Or did you just buy us with your fancy words of hope, promise, and dreams? Even Rev. Martin Luther King knew that we were treated unfairly, Even the late Corretta Scott King came out in defence of equal rights for GLBT people, but you are great hope have let us down more than anyone ever could. Mostly you let us down so much because you built us up so far to get what you wanted. Well now that you have the presidency you are showing your true colors. “YELLOW” because you are too cowardly to actually keep the promises that led you to election.

You sir were supposed to be about change, and hope and equal rights, but we believe that now that we have our first dark complected president, maybe we dont have one that understands that without Loving V Virginia his existance would have been as a bastard child rather than one where his parents could marry. The spirit of Loving V Virginia is equality for love and the fact that we cannot govern love.

Your administration sir just set back GLBT rights 20 years.

Your argument does not make sence, that we have rights in the states that allow it but in the states that dont we dont. If that argument is true then if we are married in states that have rights and live in a state that has equal marriage rights we should be able to file joint federal taxes together and have all of the other over one thousand rights we are excluded from federally. If you wish to devide our country up into individual states like this sir then do so and have federal recognition of the marriages in the states that allow it and in the “backward” states that have DOMA laws of their own, don’t recognize it.

Now you see where your argument is flawed, we hope, but you may never see this letter since they are randomly selected to be read and answered.

**Obama’s Letter to the GLBT Community while running for office and needing our votes!**

“I’m running for President to build an America that lives up to our founding promise of equality for all – a promise that extends to our gay brothers and sisters. It’s wrong to have millions of Americans living as second-class citizens in this nation. And I ask for your support in this election so that together we can bring about real change for all LGBT Americans.

Equality is a moral imperative. That’s why throughout my career, I have fought to eliminate discrimination against LGBT Americans. In Illinois, I cosponsored a fully inclusive bill that prohibited discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity, extending protection to the workplace, housing, and places of public accommodation. In the U.S. Senate, I have cosponsored bills that would equalize tax treatment for same-sex couples and provide benefits to domestic partners of federal employees. And as president, I will place the weight of my administration behind the enactment of the Matthew Shepard Act to outlaw hate crimes and a fully inclusive Employment Non- Discrimination Act to outlaw workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

As your President, I will use the bully pulpit to urge states to treat samesex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws. I personally believe that civil unions represent the best way to secure that equal treatment. But I also believe that the federal government should not stand in the way of states that want to decide on their own how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples -whether that means a domestic partnership, a civil union, or a civil marriage. I support the complete repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples, which is precisely what DOMA does. I have also called for us to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and I have worked to improve the Uniting American Families Act so we can afford same-sex couples the same rights and obligations as married couples in our immigration system.

The next president must also address the HIV/AIDS epidemic. When it comes to prevention, we do not have to choose between values and science. While abstinence education should be part of any strategy, we also need to use common sense. We should have age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception. We should pass the JUSTICE Act to combat infection within our prison population. And we should lift the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. In addition, local governments can protect public health by distributing contraceptives.

We also need a president who’s willing to confront the stigma – too often tied to homophobia – that continues to surround HIV/AIDS. I confronted this stigma directly in a speech to evangelicals at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, and will continue to speak out as president.

That is where I stand on the major issues of the day. But having the right positions on the issues is only half the battle. The other half is to win broad support for those positions. And winning broad support will require stepping outside our comfort zone. If we want to repeal DOMA, repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and implement fully inclusive laws outlawing hate crimes and discrimination in the workplace, we need to bring the message of LGBT equality to skeptical audiences as well as friendly ones – and that’s what I’ve done throughout my career. I brought this message of inclusiveness to all of America in my keynote address at the 2004 Democratic convention. I talked about the need to fight homophobia when I announced my candidacy for President, and I have been talking about LGBT equality to a number of groups during this campaign – from local LGBT activists to rural farmers to parishioners at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Dr. Martin Luther King once preached.

Just as important, I have been listening to what all Americans have to say. I will never compromise on my commitment to equal rights for all LGBT Americans. I have always been very proud of how supportive Cher was with Chastity when she came out as a “Lesbian” at age 18.  Chastity was born March 4, 1969 a few months before my own birth of August 26, 1969 so I think I always identified with her because she was so close to my age. Today I find myself supportive but confused.  Supportive because of the courage it takes to be in the spotlight and go through this change, and confused because as I approach 40 I am realizing that it truely is middle age and I would never want to undertake the begining of life again. I wonder why Chastity waited so long to “transition” to the next phase of her (prior to 3,4,09) his (after 3,4,09) life.

For those of you now confused about what I am talking about;

It has been reported that upon turning 40 (yes im close to it myself) Chastity Bono announced that she is not to be called Chastity Bono any longer that she is to be called Chaz Bono because “HE” is in the midst of transitioning to be fully transgendered FTM (female to male).

I tip my hat to you Chaz for being so brave to not only be your authentic self but continue your public work as a GLBT rights advocate. Our community is not always welcoming to our trans brothers and sisters, when they decide to “come out” but im here to tell you we should embrace our entire community, not just our Gay and Lesbian brothers and sisters.  So Chastity we will miss you, but Chaz welcome to the world, and public boy birthday!

Howard Bragman a representative for Chaz said in a statement;

“Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity,”

“He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones,” Bragman’s statement continued. “It is Chaz’s hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his ‘coming out’ did nearly 20 years ago.”

“We ask that the media respect Chaz’s privacy during this long process as he will not be doing any interviews at this time.”

We hope that when Chaz is ready for an interview, we will be on the list of interviewees.

All I can say as the femme of this duo is Chastity the “Butch” will be missed by me, (SHE WAS HOT, and another Bono I could lust over.)  but Chaz is always welcome in my rainbow community.

Thank you Mrs Clinton for standing up for GLBT people.

According to an Associated Press report from Saturday, May 23rd It seems that the ideals of  “old Washington” is turning,   realizing here in the United States Government that other countries are being more progressive than the USA is. For the first time in many years other countries are more progressive. Other countries are ahead of the curve on key issues and it could very well hurt the United States diplomacy if they are rude in any way to Foreign GLBT citizens and diplomats. Too bad they don’t realize that for United States citizens yet.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will soon announce that gay American diplomats will be given benefits similar to those that their heterosexual counterparts enjoy, U.S. officials said Saturday.

In a notice to be sent soon to State Department employees, Clinton says regulations that denied same-sex couples and their families the same rights and privileges that straight diplomats enjoyed are “unfair and must end,” as they harm U.S. diplomacy.

“Providing training, medical care and other benefits to domestic partners promote the cohesiveness, safety and effectiveness of our posts abroad,” she says in the message, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.

“It will also help the department attract and retain personnel in a competitive environment where domestic partner benefits and allowances are increasingly the norm for world-class employers,” she says.

“At bottom, the department will provide these benefits for both opposite-sex and same-sex domestic partners because it is the right thing to do,” Clinton says.

Among the benefits that will now be granted gay diplomats: the right of domestic partners to hold diplomatic passports, government-paid travel for their partners and families to and from foreign posts, and the use of U.S. medical facilities abroad.

In addition, gay diplomats’ families will now be eligible for U.S. government emergency evacuations and training courses at the Foreign Service Institute, the message says.

The announcement, expected this week, was provided to the AP by a State Department official who is a member of the Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies organization. Two department officials not affiliated with the organization confirmed its accuracy.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the changes.

Previously, the State Department had withheld some benefits from the families of gay diplomats, citing the Defense of Marriage Law, which had restricted federal recognition of same-sex marriages.

One former ambassador, Michael Guest, resigned from the foreign service in 2007 to protest the restrictions. Guest was a part of the Obama administration’s State Department transition team and played a major role in lobbying for the changes.

Clinton told members of Congress last week that she would soon announce the revisions.

From birth we are forced into gender roles, we will either fit into the “pink bonnet” or the “blue bonnet” that the nurses place on our head as our first piece of clothing.

The pink and blue hospital knit caps have more power than most think.

The pink and blue hospital knit caps have more power than most think. New moms and dads hang all their hopes, dreams and fears on the color of that tiny little bonnet. If the baby emerges with a blue bonnet on the dad can be seen all glassy eyed dreaming of a life of sports, fixing cars and playing catch in the yard, you know “Guy Stuff”, “The stuff of manly men.” But if the baby emerges with a pink cap both mother and father seem to gain the glassy eyed look, dreaming of proms, first dates, a wedding, grandchildren, dance classes and frilly clothing, you know “girlie stuff” or “daddy’s little girl stuff.”

Gender Neutral until we are old enough to choose would be better.

What happens if when we emerge we would rather wear the yellow bonnet?After all; the color yellow is soothing, it is non intrusive, and it doesn’t define a role for us. With a yellow cap a girl could be a “tomboy” and a boy could be “effeminate” without judgments. Contrary to popular belief, there are some men out there that would enjoy the experience of giving birth, just like there are some women out there who are completely against it. Does this make those people gay or lesbian? NO; it just makes them yellow bonnet wearers. Why cant we just embrace people for who they are instead of the roles they are expected to be in because of genitalia?

Gender Roles are prescribed at birth from the medical community.

When a child enters school the gender roles we pigeon toe them into are even more pronounced. Boys are expected to play rough on the school yard with the other boys and get dirty, while girls are expected to chit chat in a corner someplace and stay “pin neat”. The girls are expected to glance over at the boys every now and again admiring their brawn, while the boys are expected to get in a “wolf pack” from time to time, glance toward the girls and say silly things like ” she is hot” or “I did her”. When this behavior is all for show, because of the roles we have been placed into. If we weren’t expected to act this way many of us would just play all together in a group of kids and forget about that silly little hospital cap color.

Many GLBT people will tell you that throughout their school years all they wanted to do was be on the other side of the play ground. I know for myself I loved to play rough, but I also enjoyed dressing feminine. It was hard to talk my teachers into letting me play kickball with the boys, when I was wearing a dress, so I stopped wearing dresses. Hersband has stated multiple times that all she ever wanted was to be a boy, it wasn’t so much about the genitalia it was the privilege that boys gain by having their “twig and berries”. This role confusion can wreak havoc on an other wise great adult relationship. Because we strive so hard to be in the roles we enjoy while being pushed by society to be something we are not on the inside.

Take for instance the “butch ” lesbian, who had no interest in dresses, barbies and “coffee clutches”, but instead was interested in sports, being strong in will and mind, and taking care of her family. As Hersband says because this was a male dominated area many women thought they must want to be men. Then you have Femme women who love to dress girlie but have no interest in men as mates, and even enjoy sports and some of the things that are typical boy areas. Lets not forget the women that are more androgynous, and do not  especially enjoy either role but dip on both sides, they may enjoy a womens’ cut on their clothing but not going as far as a dress, they may enjoy a relationship but would rather it be an equal partnership with no male/female dynamic. Even in the gay man world they have the same issues with gender roles, and don’t get me started on trans who really have it hard as their gender roles are forced upon them when inside they know they are not what is seen on the outside.

Who are you on the inside?

Many people become confused because someone may say they feel like a girl when they are born with the genitalia of a boy, but then also state that they are attracted to the sex they feel they are. What you have to understand is that Gender Identity is completely separate from Sexual Identity. Just because you are born a boy, know you are truly a girl, and love girls for partners does not mean you are a freak. What this does mean is that you have a gender identity and a sexual identity, You were dealt a double wammy. Yes in much of our populis gender identity and sexual identity will match up but because of when these two parts of our being are formed (in utero at different stages of development) one may form one way and the other may form another way. They believe now that the hormones of the mother while the child is in utero plays a huge role in not only our sexual identity but also our gender identity.

My thought is that we need to let go of what we were taught all of our lives about what a girl is and what a boy is and relearn what a human is! We are all different and should embrace our differences, not ridicule those who have them. I have a grand friend Kate Bornstein whom I admire more than she will ever know, she is someone on the front lines for trans people everywhere, while embracing who she is and making no apologize for it. She may not know this but I have been reading her work for many years, and she herself has helped Hersband and I (Wife) understand the trans community more than we did before. If you haven’t read anything she has written you are missing out on an experience that will open your mind to the understanding that gender and sexuality is fluid and people are who they are and it has nothing to do with the equipment they are born with.

This is enough Rambling for today, I could go on for days about this subject as it goes so deep to the core of who we all are, but I would like to open the floor for discussion. Lets get a dialog started that may help show people that there are many of us out here that if given the choice between pink or blue we would rather wear yellow.

It is easy to post on the internet, and pass on a tweet on twitter about some great new advancement. But when it comes down to what goes on to get all of us our equal rights, someone has to pay the people on the front lines. Lets face it the people fighting for your rights every day have to eat too.
Who pays for the web server space? The programming of the wonderful pages of content we all enjoy on the internet cost hard earned $$. Who pays for the cameras that film the videos we all enjoy? Who pays the travel costs for those who speak before congress and other places? Who pays for the lodging when these great equality fighters have to travel?

There are people working every day for FREE, paying their own way from funds earned at minimum wadge jobs and in many cases doing without so that we all gain equality in the world. We have always worked on all that we do for free here at Hersband and Wife, The advice, The vlogs the Blogs, making sure that our community keeps up on the latest changes in laws that affect them.

What prompted this blog today has come out of a lot of soul searching. Wife has had some health problems going on for quite a while now that has kept her from working her full time job that earns her a paycheck. Because of all this time off, she has had more time to work on H&W and all that we do, but sadly this does not support our family. While Wife is on the mend, we were still perplexed that many people thought we were wealthy just because of our professionalism. To the contrary, H&W do what they do for everyone else while living week to week. Just like many of you, illness places great financial hardship on H&W, but we do not give up on our commitment to our community. All we can hope is that our community will not give up on us.

Because of our current situation, it made us wonder what people think drives all the work that goes into advancing GLBT rights? Do they donate to causes that they believe in?
We understand that times are hard right now, but we also understand that everyone can donate $1.00 to a cause they believe in. If everyone that believes in a project donated only $1.00 many of the groups that are working feverishly to “get the job done” would have the funds they need to move mountains.

Historically GLBT people make much less money and are in lower tax brackets than their hetero counterparts, but the only way to change this is to band together as a community, support the people trying to change everything for the better, and make our presence known in a positive manner.

Everyday people just like you Donate what they can afford, to help keep the forward momentum we all have enjoyed.

When we got our Civil union in CT 2 years ago, we understood that Lambda Legal and HRC had a hand in our ability to enjoy the rights that we gained with our Civil union.
We may not have all of the rights but we have more than we had 10 years ago and for that we are thankful. To mark our “Civil Union Anniversary” we started sending what we could afford to HRC as a donation to mark how thankful we are for the work they do. We did it anonymously as a donation is not about credit for the one who donates, it is about thanks to the organization, for a job well done.

So we are asking you, do you have a few extra dollars to support a GLBT community organization, or even a person or people who make a difference in your life. We as GLBT people cannot continually let people go into financial hardship, while working to advance our rights and awareness.

We support many couples by helping them see the sunshine through clouds, We are here to help our community stay abreast on the latest happenings within the political systems of our country. We will never give up until in our world we not only have equal rights, but also are treated equally by all and no longer have people brutally slain, beaten, raped or even tossed on the street for just being who they are.

Oprah Website Promoted the New Grilled Chicken

KFC Joined with Oprah to promote their newest product on Oprah’s website.
This was the page seen when going to the Oprah website for the new grilled chicken that KFC was promoting.
The offering was for a two piece grilled chicken meal free if you had the printed coupon.
The problem with this was they asked that people print no more than four per person.
The even bigger problem now is that people redeem coupons in bad times, and many times they will print more than the requested amount, and continue to use them for a “FREE LUNCH” .
What was KFC thinking?

Nice try but you cant have employees work for free, nor can you have customers work (cut out coupons, tell friends creating free word of mouth advertising) and drive to your stores on a budget that you conveniently thumb your nose at.
Next time Mr. KFC CEO think out your advertising to the end before you launch it!!
