Sarah Palin 2009 Calendar Cover

I have read many blogs and news today that discuss Sarah Palin, the Moose Hunting Governor from Wasilla, AK, stepping down from her post. Her quote of the day according to CNN, was Something to the effect that we all need to trust her, that her stepping down would all make sense later.
Well Sarah; you were right it makes total sense when we find out that you may be in yet ANOTHER scandal. Lets see; your teen daughters pregnancy out of wedlock wasn’t enough for you, then you had “Trooper gate” and now you may be indited by the feds on embezzlement charges for helping get contracts for Spenard Builders Supply? Hmmmm Don’t you and your husband have close ties to that company?

Way to bring down the Republican Party, but a colleague ( Representative Sally Kern (R) from Oklahoma ) of yours seems to think that we gays are responsible, for all that is wrong with America. HA HA HA ever heard of Glass houses and people living in them not throwing stones?

The downfall of “traditional marriage” is our fault? Ok what about all the straight folks, who cheat on their spouses, on sites like Ashley Madison? Last We checked gays were not allowed and what about all the government officials caught cheating on their spouses lately? Last we checked they weren’t  going gay.

You republicans need to check your stats, GLBT marriages (in the states that are legal) have less of a divorce rate than those of their straight counterparts.

You all are the reasons H&W will be going on the Marriage Equality Tour, to spread the truth that our marriages are not a threat to “traditional families”, you straight people are enough threat for everyone with your “for now” attitude with prenups and marriage contracts.

We have a gay male couple friends who have been together 27 years, without legal marriage and now that one of them has cancer, don’t you think it is only fair to give them full marriage rights. If anyone has earned it they have.

Ok now that we have ranted, back to what other bloggers and news sources are saying about the Palin Story!!

Wayne Barret of the Villiage Voice had this to say:

“THE $12.5 MILLION sports complex and hockey rink that is the lasting monument to Palin’s two terms as Wasilla mayor is also a monument to the kind of insider politics that dismays Americans of both parties. Six months before Palin stepped down as mayor in October 2002, the city awarded nearly a half-million-dollar contract to design the biggest project in Wasilla history to Kumin Associates. Blase Burkhart was the Kumin architect on the job—the son of Roy Burkhart, who is frequently described as a “mentor” of Palin and was head of the local Republican Party (his wife, June, who also advised Palin, is the national committeewoman). Asked if the contract was a favor, Roy Burkhart, who contributed to her campaign in the same time frame that his son got the contract, said: “I really don’t know.” Palin then named Blase Burkhart to a seven-member builder-selection committee that picked Howdie Inc., a mostly residential contractor owned at the time by Howard Nugent. Formally awarded the contract a couple of weeks after Palin left office, Nugent has donated $4,000 to Palin campaigns.”

“A list of subcontractors on the job, obtained by the Voice, includes many with Palin ties. One was Spenard Builders Supply, the state’s leading supplier of wood, floor, roof, and other “pre-engineered components.” In addition to being a sponsor of Todd Palin’s snow-machine team that has earned tens of thousands for the Palin family, Spenard hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004. When the Palins began building a new family home off Lake Lucille in 2002—at the same time that Palin was running for lieutenant governor and in her final months as mayor—Spenard supplied the materials, according to Antoine Bricks, who works in its Wasilla office. Spenard actually filed a notice “of its right to assert a lien” on the deed for the Palin property after contracting for labor and materials for the site. Spenard’s name has popped up in the trial of Senator Stevens—it worked on the house that is at the center of the VECO scandal as well.”

“Sarah Palin Indictment – Alaska Governor Sarah Palin reportedly resigned because of a federal indictment pending in an embezzlement scandal that allegedly involves her receiving huge financial favors from Spenard”

This is what Brad from Brad’s Blog had to say:

“I’ve now been able to get independent information from multiple sources that all of this precedes what are said to be possible federal indictments against Palin, concerning an embezzlement scandal related to the building of Palin’s house and the Wasilla Sports Complex built during her tenure as Mayor. Both structures, it is said, feature the “same windows, same wood, same products.” Federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent, according to the Alaska sources.”

The Daily Beast’s reported this by Max Blumenthal:

“Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide open state.”

“SBS has close ties to the Palins. The company has not only sponsored Todd Palin’s snowmobile team, according to the Village Voice’s Wayne Barrett, it hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004.”

Wisconsin has a law banning marriage equality and civil unions but on June 29th, 2009 Governor Jim Doyle Signed a legislation (the State Budget) that included coverages for same-sex partners involved in long-term relationships. This move makes Wisconsin the first state to enact domestic partnership when there is an existing DOMA law on the books with a constitutional amendment banning marriage equality and civil unions.

According to  Fair Wisconsin:

“Today’s victory makes Wisconsin the first state in the nation with an existing constitutional amendment banning marriage equality and civil unions to enact domestic partnerships. The bill grants important protections to same-sex couples in caring, committed relationships, including hospital visitation, end-of-life decision making, and the ability to take Family Medical Leave to care for a sick or injured partner. This makes Wisconsin the first state in the Midwest to legislatively enact protections for same-sex couples – putting the state whose motto is “Forward” back on a progressive track towards full equality.”

We are very proud of what Wisconsin’s Governor Doyle has done in his states with the limitations that are on him with the DOMA laws in place.  If more states would take this baby step toward equality, it would make it easier for the DOMA laws to be stricken from the record books.

It is just a shame that President Obama doesn’t take a lead like Governor Doyle did and start with the small steps to gain the larger one of total marriage equality.

Congratulations Wisconsin, you are on your way.

They Rioted Post Stonewall! What will we do Post Rainbow lounge??

Do you ever sit back and contemplate all the changes that have come in the last 40 years? The fact that during the days of Stonewall GLBT people were not only accosted but could be committed for insanity just for being GLBT still appalls us. But, the Homophobia that existed back in 1969 still runs very rampant today but not enough to cause the events of that infamous evening right? WRONG! 40 years to the day from the Stonewall Inn Raid there has been another raid, this time at a little known bar outside of Dallas, TX. According to the Ft. Worth Police Department, routine raids were being conducted on a few bars in the area in collaboration with the Alcohol Beverage Commission. The Rainbow Lounge was caught in the cross fires this time where 6 officers and 2 ABC agents raided the GLBT bar.

In many cases these raids are simple they (the authorities) enter the establishment, card everyone, check the ABC license of the bartender and leave without incident. But in this case the Police arrested 7 people for Public Drunkenness, (hmmm isn’t that what a bar is for to get drunk?)

Now keep in mind that it only takes one police officer maybe two at best and one ABC agent, but in this case it was an over kill of 6 and 2. In the FT Worth Police defense they say that the 9 arrested were VERY drunk and had made sexual advances on the officers. One of the men taken from the scene was taken in an ambulance with a fractured skull after being “taken down” for grabbing an officer’s crotch allegedly.

Was it necessary to have this amount of force for "public intoxication"?

There were eye witness accounts that differ significantly from that of the authorities on record. One has stated that he was sitting with friends on the patio when the officers entered the area. They asked why everyone had gotten so quiet, when one in the group continued the conversation officers arrested one of the patrons. Another witness stated that he watched as the first patron was arrested. He states that a man at the bar took a sip of his drink and was bushed on the bar by the officer and handcuffed. None of the witnesses remembered or recounted any sexual advances toward any officer or ABC agent.

Now keep in mind that we know that straight people don’t really keep much gay history in their head such as the 40^th anniversary of stonewall and all but they surely knew that the Million Gay March was to be heald the next day in Dallas.

So we ask….

Coincidence? We think not! This just goes to show you nothing has really changed it is only being said behind our backs now so they can get away with it.

All the more reasons why the H&W Marriage Equality Tour will go on and should be something to help each city we visit mobilize against attacks like this. If we are willing to stand up and be counted in every state, you as GLBT Americans should be willing to stand with us for positive change!

This is why we are Hersband and Wife “Working together to form a more perfect union between the GLBT community and the Heterosexual majority.”

Obama great promises, no delivery.

Though our beloved president never claimed to be anything but straight, he did give  GLBT people hope that in our future (the next 4-8 years) we would be treated more equally.

In his acceptance speech upon winning the presidential election he said;

” If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

Its the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.

Its the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled – Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.”

When the word “Gay” was spoken the crowd went wild, because those are the words we had been waiting for. We as GLBT citizens have been waiting our entire lives to have someone in the White House that not only understood that we were being treated unfairly but also that we needed the government to do something about it. OHH and lets not forget his campaign promises, where Obama is quoted as saying;

“As your President, I will use the bully pulpit to urge states to treat samesex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws. I personally believe that civil unions represent the best way to secure that equal treatment.

Just as important, I have been listening to what all Americans have to say. I will never compromise on my commitment to equal rights for all LGBT Americans. But neither will I close my ears to the voices of those who still need to be convinced. That is the work we must do to move forward together. It is difficult. It is challenging. And it is necessary.

Americans are yearning for leadership that can empower us to reach for what we know is possible. I believe that we can achieve the goal of full equality for the millions of LGBT people in this country. To do that, we need leadership that can appeal to the best parts of the human spirit.”

President Obama was this just lip service to get our vote and our campaign contributions? We have supported you, campaigned for you and even given you the bennifit of the doubt when DADT was not repealed right away. But your most recent acts in support of DOMA flies in the face of every GLBT person that not only believed in you and your administration but also beleived in your “yes we can” and “Change” message.

So because you President Obama are no better than Mr Mcain would have been for GLBT people and equal rights for all, did our vote truely count. Or did you just buy us with your fancy words of hope, promise, and dreams? Even Rev. Martin Luther King knew that we were treated unfairly, Even the late Corretta Scott King came out in defence of equal rights for GLBT people, but you are great hope have let us down more than anyone ever could. Mostly you let us down so much because you built us up so far to get what you wanted. Well now that you have the presidency you are showing your true colors. “YELLOW” because you are too cowardly to actually keep the promises that led you to election.

You sir were supposed to be about change, and hope and equal rights, but we believe that now that we have our first dark complected president, maybe we dont have one that understands that without Loving V Virginia his existance would have been as a bastard child rather than one where his parents could marry. The spirit of Loving V Virginia is equality for love and the fact that we cannot govern love.

Your administration sir just set back GLBT rights 20 years.

Your argument does not make sence, that we have rights in the states that allow it but in the states that dont we dont. If that argument is true then if we are married in states that have rights and live in a state that has equal marriage rights we should be able to file joint federal taxes together and have all of the other over one thousand rights we are excluded from federally. If you wish to devide our country up into individual states like this sir then do so and have federal recognition of the marriages in the states that allow it and in the “backward” states that have DOMA laws of their own, don’t recognize it.

Now you see where your argument is flawed, we hope, but you may never see this letter since they are randomly selected to be read and answered.

**Obama’s Letter to the GLBT Community while running for office and needing our votes!**

“I’m running for President to build an America that lives up to our founding promise of equality for all – a promise that extends to our gay brothers and sisters. It’s wrong to have millions of Americans living as second-class citizens in this nation. And I ask for your support in this election so that together we can bring about real change for all LGBT Americans.

Equality is a moral imperative. That’s why throughout my career, I have fought to eliminate discrimination against LGBT Americans. In Illinois, I cosponsored a fully inclusive bill that prohibited discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity, extending protection to the workplace, housing, and places of public accommodation. In the U.S. Senate, I have cosponsored bills that would equalize tax treatment for same-sex couples and provide benefits to domestic partners of federal employees. And as president, I will place the weight of my administration behind the enactment of the Matthew Shepard Act to outlaw hate crimes and a fully inclusive Employment Non- Discrimination Act to outlaw workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

As your President, I will use the bully pulpit to urge states to treat samesex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws. I personally believe that civil unions represent the best way to secure that equal treatment. But I also believe that the federal government should not stand in the way of states that want to decide on their own how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples -whether that means a domestic partnership, a civil union, or a civil marriage. I support the complete repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples, which is precisely what DOMA does. I have also called for us to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and I have worked to improve the Uniting American Families Act so we can afford same-sex couples the same rights and obligations as married couples in our immigration system.

The next president must also address the HIV/AIDS epidemic. When it comes to prevention, we do not have to choose between values and science. While abstinence education should be part of any strategy, we also need to use common sense. We should have age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception. We should pass the JUSTICE Act to combat infection within our prison population. And we should lift the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. In addition, local governments can protect public health by distributing contraceptives.

We also need a president who’s willing to confront the stigma – too often tied to homophobia – that continues to surround HIV/AIDS. I confronted this stigma directly in a speech to evangelicals at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, and will continue to speak out as president.

That is where I stand on the major issues of the day. But having the right positions on the issues is only half the battle. The other half is to win broad support for those positions. And winning broad support will require stepping outside our comfort zone. If we want to repeal DOMA, repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and implement fully inclusive laws outlawing hate crimes and discrimination in the workplace, we need to bring the message of LGBT equality to skeptical audiences as well as friendly ones – and that’s what I’ve done throughout my career. I brought this message of inclusiveness to all of America in my keynote address at the 2004 Democratic convention. I talked about the need to fight homophobia when I announced my candidacy for President, and I have been talking about LGBT equality to a number of groups during this campaign – from local LGBT activists to rural farmers to parishioners at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Dr. Martin Luther King once preached.

Just as important, I have been listening to what all Americans have to say. I will never compromise on my commitment to equal rights for all LGBT Americans. But neither will I close my ears to the voices of those who still need to be convinced. That is the work we must do to move forward together. It is difficult. It is challenging. And it is necessary.
